- a.Explain what public health is. Explain how various diseases are contracted.
- b.Choose any FOUR diseases or conditions and explain how each one is contracted and possibly prevented.
- c.For each disease or condition in requirement 1(b), explain the type, vectors for transmission, ways to help prevent exposure, and available treatments.

Do the following:
- a.Explain the meaning of immunization.
- b.Name eight diseases against which a young child should be immunized.
- c.Discuss with your counselor diseases which currently have no immunization available.

Discuss the importance of safe drinking water in terms of the spread of disease.

Explain what a vector is and how insects and rodents can be controlled.

With your parent's and counselor's approval, do ONE of the following: visit a wastewater treatment facility or visit a food service facility.

- a.Describe the health dangers from air, water, and noise pollution.
- b.Describe health dangers from tobacco use and alcohol and drug abuse.
- c.Describe the health dangers from abusing illegal and prescription drugs.

With your parent or guardian's and counselor's approval, do ONE of the following: visit a public health agency, or familiarize yourself with a health agency's website.

Pick a profession in the public health sector that interests you. Find out the education, training, and experience required.

How to Earn the Public Health Merit Badge
1. Get a blue card and a counselor
Ask your Scoutmaster for approval to start Public Health, then find a registered merit badge counselor for it through your troop or council.
2. Plan around the setting
Public Health is usually earned on your own with a counselor. Schedule regular check-ins with your counselor so partial progress does not stall.
3. Budget the time
Expect about a month for a moderate badge like this one. Working with a partner or at a merit badge clinic can shorten it.
