Multisport and the Trail to Eagle

Multisport is an elective merit badge. It is not required for any rank, but it can count as one of the 8 elective badges a scout needs for Eagle, alongside the 13 Eagle-required badges.     Do the following:

    1. a.Explain the most likely hazards in multisport activities and how to anticipate, prevent, mitigate, and respond to them.
    2. b.Show first aid for abrasions, blisters, concussions, contusions, dehydration, hypothermia, overheating, sprains, and strains.

    Do the following:

    1. a.Explain the importance of a physical exam and have one done using the Annual Health and Medical Record.
    2. b.Explain why good health habits matter in training and how tobacco, alcohol, and other substances hurt performance.
    3. c.Define a healthy diet and explain why it matters.

    Do the following:

    1. a.Discuss your experience with swimming, biking, and running and the order and distance of each segment.
    2. b.Explain which sport is your strongest and which you could improve the most.
    3. c.Identify the required equipment for swimming, biking, and running.
    4. d.Choose ONE format for the remaining requirements: triathlon, duathlon, aquathlon, or aquabike.

    Complete all activities that apply to your chosen format:

    1. a.Swimming: earn the Swimming merit badge before requirements 5 through 8.
    2. b.Swimming: explain Safe Swim Defense and how you will follow it.
    3. c.Swimming: explain the difference between pool and open-water swims and when a wetsuit is appropriate.
    4. d.Biking: explain how to ride predictably, be conspicuous, think ahead, and ride ready.
    5. e.Biking: discuss what to check regularly to make sure a bicycle is safe.
    6. f.Biking: explain why a properly fitted helmet and weather-appropriate clothing matter.
    7. g.Running: demonstrate a proper warmup and cool-down and explain hydration, nutrition, injury prevention, and rest.
    8. h.Running: state the basic rules of the road for runners.
    9. i.Running: demonstrate high knees, butt kicks, lunges, inchworms, and soldier kicks.

    Do the following:

    1. a.With your counselor, set up a four-week training plan for your format with sessions of at least 25 minutes, each with a warmup and stretching.
    2. b.Track your training with a chart or other method.
    3. c.Set a personal improvement goal for time, technique, or distance.
    4. d.After four weeks, discuss your progress and how training affected you mentally and physically.

    Learn how to set up a transition area and discuss how to move smoothly and safely between segments, such as mounting and dismounting the bike.

    After requirements 1 through 6, complete your chosen format on the same day with smooth transitions:

    1. a.Triathlon: swim 100 m, bike 3 km, run 1 km.
    2. b.Duathlon: run 1.5 km, bike 3 km, run 0.75 km.
    3. c.Aquathlon: swim 100 m, run 1 km.
    4. d.Aquabike: swim 100 m, bike 3 km.

    Do TWO of the following and discuss with your counselor:

    1. a.Identify two ways to keep participating in multisport after the badge.
    2. b.Research an Olympic, Paralympic, or professional triathlete and share what inspires you.
    3. c.Start a training group and teach peers about physical activity, nutrition, and multisport.
    4. d.Sign up for and participate in a sanctioned multisport event.
    5. e.Volunteer at a multisport event, running race, biking event, swim meet, or adaptive sporting event.
