Archaeology and the Trail to Eagle

Archaeology is an elective merit badge. It is not required for any rank, but it can count as one of the 8 elective badges a scout needs for Eagle, alongside the 13 Eagle-required badges. Archaeology Merit Badge Requirements

Tell what archaeology is and explain how it differs from or relates to other fields of study such as anthropology, geology, paleontology, and history.

Describe the following steps of the archaeological process: site location, development of background research and a research design, site survey and fieldwork, artifact identification and examination, interpretation, preservation, and information sharing.

Describe at least two ways in which archaeologists determine the age of sites, structures, or artifacts. Explain what absolute dating and relative dating are.

Learn about a combined total of five archaeological sites located both within and outside the United States.
1. a.For EACH site you research, point it out on a map and explain how it was discovered.
2. b.Choose ONE of the sites and give a short presentation about your findings.

Do the following:
1. a.Learn about the federal laws and international conventions that protect archaeological sites.
2. b.Identify a national, international, or local organization that helps to protect archaeological sites.

1. a.With your parent or guardian's and counselor's permission, assist a qualified archaeologist for at least eight hours with a project.
2. b.With your counselor's approval, take part in a simulated archaeological project.

Under the supervision of a qualified archaeologist or instructor, do ONE of the following:
1. a.Help prepare an archaeological exhibit for display.
2. b.Use the methods of experimental archaeology to re-create an item or to practice a skill from the past.

How to Earn the Archaeology Merit Badge

1. Get a blue card and a counselor

Ask your Scoutmaster for approval to start Archaeology, then find a registered merit badge counselor for it through your troop or council.

2. Plan around the setting

Archaeology is usually earned anywhere. Pick whichever setting lets you work with your counselor most consistently.

3. Budget the time

Expect about a month for a moderate badge like this one. Working with a partner or at a merit badge clinic can shorten it.

4. Track every requirement
