Canoeing Merit Badge Requirements

- a.Explain the most likely hazards you may encounter while participating in canoeing activities.
- b.Review prevention, symptoms, and first-aid treatment for injuries that could occur while canoeing.

Before doing requirements 3 through 9, successfully complete the Scouting America swimmer test.

Name and point to the parts of a canoe and paddle.

Demonstrate how to choose a paddle of the correct length and how to get into and out of a canoe.

Demonstrate the following strokes: bow stroke, stern stroke, J-stroke, draw, pushaway, pry, and sculling draw.

Demonstrate the ability to capsize a canoe in deep water and how to right it.

With a partner, paddle a canoe in a straight line for at least 100 yards, stop, pivot, and return.

Demonstrate how to properly store and care for canoes and paddles.

Discuss Leave No Trace principles as they relate to canoeing. Take a canoe trip of at least 4 hours.

How to Earn the Canoeing Merit Badge
